Wanted to know about motorcycle seats........
We took a short road trip to All-Nu Upholstery in Revere, Mass to find out.
The owner, Joe Gulla, took the time out of a busy day to talk with us, show us the work that goes into restoring a motorcycle seat and making custom seats. We were impressed. It was a lot more than just getting a piece of vinyl and stapling it to the seat pan.
All-Nu has been restoring and building motorcycle seats for almost 30 years now. Gulla has seen it all. "From basic black vinyl to the most exotic skins you can imagine, we've done them all". From individual riders to some of the area's top custom bike builders... everyone knows about (and goes to) All-Nu. Spending an hour looking through their photo album proves it.
Restoring a seat....
|
If a customer wants to restore a seat to its original look then the folks at All-Nu will first match the covering material and then begin to disassemble the seat. All the old, dried out, decayed foam is removed. Any repairs to the seatpan are made (metal seatpans have any rust removed, repairs made, and then repainted). The plastic seatpans will have any repairs made with fiberglass and then repainted. Once the seatpan is ready the new covering is stitched as an exact replica of the original seat. Rolls, pleats, buttons, and piping match the original seat. New foam is cut to the desired shape. If the customer wants, All-Nu can also add a gel pad for added comfort (it will still look completely stock on the outside). When the seat leaves the shop it looks like it just came off the factory floor but it is MUCH more comfortable.

Custom Seats
Some customers provide a seatpan and a sketch, others provide an existing seat and and idea, others bring the bike and All-Nu makes the seatpan from scratch. In all cases, the outcome is awesome!
All-Nu has fabricated seats from all sorts materials from vinyls, leathers, fabrics, furs, exotic skins, and those that you wouldn't think of (like chainmail!). Custom stitching of flames, tribal designs, company logos, and pretty much anything else that can be sketched. These designs are all flat two-dimensional works of art but many times are 3-Dimensional and will cause people to stop in their tracks to check out these amazing works.
Here is a small sample of what they have created.... (exotic skins in these pictures include ostrich, stingray, and hornback alligator)
