Tentative Date (copied from last year)  Sept 15 (Saturday)   2nd annual Sarah's Ride & Firefighters appreciation Day

Portsmouth Firefighters Charitable Association

Event: 2nd Annual Sarah’s Ride & Fire Fighter Appreciation Day
Date: September 17, 2011 9:00am to 5:00pm
Location: Seacoast Harley - Davidson, North Hampton, NH

The Portsmouth Firefighters Charitable Association is holding the annual Sarah’s Ride in honor of Portsmouth Fire Fighter Sarah Fox.

Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 9, 2007. At the time she was also 36 ½ weeks pregnant with twins.
Twelve hours after her diagnosis the twins were born making a family of seven.
While it wasn’t easy, Sarah fought through the many challenges and treatments that cancer brings and beat the odds returning to work in January 2009.

Just over a year later Sarah developed a pain in her hip which was discovered to be cancer.
Sarah, her husband Matt, and their 5 children and extended family are faced with the fight against cancer once again.
Sarah continues to fight this illness today.

Sarah’s fight has touched us all. The 1st annual ride was organized by firefighters and their families to help Sarah and her family, the nearly 400 motorcycles in the ride and the 2500 people attending the event raised over $20,000 for Sarah and her family. The 2nd annual Sarah’s ride funds will be held in the charitable association’s accounts and be used to continue the mission of helping firefighters and families suffering a devastating illness and to support the Portsmouth firefighters charitable giving to the community.

Together we can make a difference in the life of someone who needs a helping hand.

*What is Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP)?
One of the rarest, most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine, it causes bone to form in muscles,
tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues. Bridges of extra bone develop across joints,
progressively restricting movement and forming a second skeleton that imprisons the body in bone. There
are only 700 known cases of FOP in the entire world. For more information about FOP, please go to
www.ifopa.org.

For the rest of us we’ll make our way from Ben & Jerry’s through the Green Mountain National Forest to spend the night in Brandon VT. On Sunday we’ll ride through western Vermont to Fort Ticonderoga and some of the other sights in eastern New York. We’ll stop for Lunch in the Lake George area then make our way back through Vermont to the Merrimack Valley from where we started.
On Saturday 24-Sept-2011 we’ll start from the Tedeschi Food Shop / Gas Station / Honey Dew Donunts 162 ROCKINGHAM RD , LONDONDERRY, NH  03053 (http://mapq.st/jnf2pm) KSU 7:00 am

The Ride for Our Heroes is a true motorcycle enthusiast event honoring our Nation’s service members, veterans and their families while raising needed funds for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program. Funds raised for the Home Base Program will provide clinical care to the many veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan affected by combat stress and/or traumatic brain injuries as well as counseling support to their families.

The Ride features starting points from locations throughout New England and will kick off with an opening ceremony and acknowledgement of local military heroes. The Ride concludes with a Rider Appreciation Party at Manchester Harley-Davidson in Manchester, New Hampshire. It is sure to be a great after-party for bikers and families.

We hope you will join us for this great event and help make a difference in the lives of New England veterans. We invite you to register for the Ride at www.homebaseprogram.org/rideforourheroes . Also, be sure to check out the custom-built Home Base Dirico motorcycle we are raffling off. Raffle tickets are available on the website for just $10. Please help us spread the word about the Ride for Our Heroes to your fellow members, friends and family. If you’d like printed flyers or posters to hang, please let me know and I will be happy to send them to you.

All the proceeds from this event benefit the Home Base Program. The Home Base Program is the first non-profit partnership in the nation that forms a multidisciplinary program for service members, veterans and their families by combining efforts in combat stress and traumatic brain injury clinical treatment, family support, education, outreach and biomedical research into one cohesive program. The Home Base Program serves New England by identifying, motivating and treating service members, veterans and families affected by the invisible wounds of war – combat stress and traumatic brain injury. It also strives to be a leader in finding and implementing new treatments for PTSD and TBI.
