The first generation EFI was crapI have an 03 FLHTI (second gnereation EFI made by GM/Dephi) and with the help of my local shop ( Stewy's Customs) I added a Power Commander with a decent map for my configuration (Ness Big Sucker, stock pipes) and the bike runs 1000% better than it did stock. The 07 and 08 FI systems are somewhat of a horror show, because of the addition of catalytic converters and O2 sensors in most models. There have been complaints about the start up cycle of the 07 models with the Power Commander keeping the fuel pump from pressurizing on initialization if I recall correctly. Then there are the heat management system issues (IMHO brought on by the EPA mandated lean running engines) and the problems the 06 bikes had that required the change to 25 degree injectors. In all honesty, even if you went carb'd, you'll be going in to rejet it because the carb'd bikes still are under the thumb of the EPA. Let's face it nothing the MoCo makes runs as good as it could because the MoCo's hands are tied, and to a point ours are too.I do like the FI I have, it stats first time every time, from 20 degrees to 100 degrees, no choke to play with, just hit the button, count to 5 and off I go. On the other hand I am glad my rice bike has carbs, the Kawi FI system on the big inline 4's is super restricted in the first gears, using sub throttle plates and a different map for the lower gears. There are ways to uncork the bottom 4 gears by removing the sub throttles ( which creates a super lean condition) and adding a resistor to the transmission gear position switch to trick the bike into thinking it is in the 5th or 6th gear... a Power Commander and dyno time is a must to get rid of the mid range lean condition the sub throttle plate removal causes.
